Have you hugged an artist today? And by hugged, I mean supported (although we like hugs, too).
dictionary.com defines support this way:
“something that serves as a foundation, prop, brace, or stay.”
So, those who support independent artists, & all “mom & pops” are our FOUNDATION- the means by which we ‘stay’. Making art for a living may seem like all fun & games, & often it is, but the real creativity, for any working artist is the business end. That’s the ‘make it or break it’. Marketing, selling, getting our work “out there”. More often than not, it’s not our strongest talent, it’s just plain difficult at best.
For me, it sort of comes in fits & starts. There are times I can throw myself headlong into marketing my work, & more frequently, the times I just want to hole up in my studio & animate some of these ideas percolating in my brain.
It is a great notion to say we do our art for ourselves, for the joy, or the benediction, or the outlet, the self expression…but truth be told, for working artists, we need others in order to make a living doing what we love. We never take that lightly.
Some of you may know that I sign my work with the universal symbol for gratitude. Every piece I make has this symbol on it. That is from the heart. I want to send a heartfelt shout out to everyone who has supported me in 2013 (& prior years). You are the reason I “stay”. THANK YOU!
Hug an artist today!
